How cost-effective is it to make pantry staples from scratch?

Jennifer Reese worked out the actual cost of making jam, bagels, etc. at home, including utility fees.

Her verdict: make your own bagels, yogurt, and granola. She provides promising recipes too!

I wonder about the cost-effectiveness of a lot of types of cooking. While it’s obviously cheaper to make dinner for two than to go out, is it really cheaper to make your own pasta vs. buying it?

That’s some research I’d like to do.
